Anthropology of Artificial Intelligence: Limits, Hopes and Fears of AI

As the grandiose promise of AI to “scale” human intelligence for the greater societal good and planetary well-being sits uneasily with automated surveillance infrastructure, military killing machines and other harms, how do we turn to anthropology to comprehend and critique our AI present? At the American Anthropological Association's 2026 Annual Conference, Sahana Udupa will be in dialogue with fellow panelists Veronica Barassi, Sophia Goodfriend, Erkan Saka, Mark Allen Peterson, Peter Hervik, Beatrice Bonami and Roberto Gonzalez.
