OPEN POSITIONS IN NEWLY FUNDED PROJECT ON ONLINE MISOGYNY

Two open positions (one doctoral and one postdoctoral) are available (starting from 1 March 2022) in a new multiyear project on online misogyny. The project is funded by a new grant Sahana Udupa has received together with Juergen Pfeffer and Janina Steinert from the Bavarian Research Institute for Digital Transformation.

Two fully funded positions: Ethnography of online misogyny/Starting March 2022

We are looking for excellent researchers to fill the following positions for an interdisciplinary project on online misogyny:

Fluency in German and English is needed. Fluency in Hindi is desired (but not required).

Fluency in English and Portuguese is needed.

Research activities include carrying out semi-structured interviews with women who are the targets of online misogyny and online users who engage in aggressive language against women to advance their stated political goals; online ethnography of misogynistic trolling episodes; deep content analysis and discourse analysis; and analysis of policy documents. Candidates should be willing to work from Munich.

You will be part of an exciting multidisciplinary research group, with opportunities to partner with the core research team based in Munich and a global network of collaborators.

The multiyear project (2022-2026) is funded by the Bavarian Research Institute for Digital Transformation (BIDT) and will be jointly carried out by a team of ethnographers, sociologists and computer scientists at the University of Munich (LMU) and the Technical University of Munich (TUM).

ERC Consolidator Grant

Sahana Udupa received the European Research Council Consolidator Grant (2023) for a five year multi-country study on small social media platforms and contentious speech. A team of postdoctoral researchers and Udupa will explore small platform discourses and their implications in an anthropologically rooted comparative framework. UNESCO Design Challenge

At the UNESCO organized Design Challenge, 136 participants from 36 countries pitched their ideas to address gender discrimination and violence in the digital space using methodologies from digital anthropology. Sahana Udupa served on the jury with Gabriela Ramos, Richard Rogers, Anders Munk and Patrik Wikstorm to select the winning projects.
